Coherent beam instabilities related to impedance effects represent one of the main limitations to increasing beam intensity in circular accelerators. This contribution was presented at the ICFA mini-workshop on impedance and beam instabilities in particle accelerators on 18-22 September 2017 in Benevento, and aimed at providing a brief overview of the situation in circular hadron machines at the moment of the workshop.
