ESD Teaching Concrete - in Higher Education Teaching
Background: Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has not yet been sufficiently implemented in the degree programmes and university lecturers are not sufficiently prepared. So far, ESD and sustainability have only been offered to a limited extent in university didactic training and continuing education.
Goal: The aim of the portal "BNE Lehre Konkret" is to support university teachers in integrating ESD into their own subject-specific or interdisciplinary teaching. In this way, a contribution is made to meeting the diverse needs for ESD offers in higher education teaching, especially for teacher training, from the perspective of further and continuing education.
Design and methods: In the context of the network "Teacher Education for Sustainable Development" (LeNa), a working group consisting of university teachers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland has been developing an online portal with theory-based and conceptual ESD principles and good practice examples for their own university teaching since 2020. With the help of the method of consensual validation as well as collegial feedback, the teaching and learning materials, especially for teacher education, were developed on the basis of quality criteria.
Results: The portal "BNE Lehre Konkret" expands the range of German-language portals on ESD in teacher education. In various sections (About us, Basic information, Good practice examples), numerous materials with corresponding literature references are offered for one's own knowledge and competence acquisition as well as for use in one's own university teaching, especially in teacher education.
Conclusion: From an ESD perspective, the portal "BNE Lehre Konkret" reveals a great potential for university teaching to implement ESD more strongly in the context of transformative change at universities in the area of teaching.
